Defensive Driving Course (GDLS)

Advertised Courses   – Courses are advertised in the Hamilton Press on a Wednesday.

Class Numbers – Courses are between 8 (minimum) and 20 people (maximum) in a safe, modern and comfortable boardroom environment.

Times – Night Courses run from 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm, Mondays and Wednesdays, two hours per night. Daytime courses run as and when there is sufficient numbers during a normal working week but over a minimum 10 day period. (NZTA requirement)

Note: Attendance times, punctuality and course expectations cannot be compromised. Students are expected to attend for the full 8 hour theory sessions followed by a 1 hour driving assessment – no exceptions!

Course Expectations – Participants are required to complete 2 x 2 hour sessions per week over two consecutive weeks. The sessions must run consecutively with no late starters allowed. All course assignments must be completed on time as a condition of the Course. The practical assessment component is completed during normal working hours, Monday to Friday.

Note: This is a generic course so is relevant to all drivers and riders of any class of vehicle. From the 1st October 2012 the Defensive Driving Course no longer reduces the Restricted period for class 6 (motorcycle) licence holders.

Costs – Costs are very competitive and available upon enquiry,  based on using your own vehicle for the practical driving component.  For Learner Licence holders within Hamilton City, (where the tutors travel is required due to the restrictions on driving), there is an additional cost of $10.00. (Outside Hamilton City limits is normal course fees plusmileage) For motorcyclists* using their motorcycle for the practical session, an additional cost of $20.00 to the Course fees to cover the tutors motorcycle running costs.

Note: * Regardless of the class of Driver Licence held, the On–Road Assessment is best and easier completed in a car.

Health & Safety: The Defensive Driving Course is accepted by many corporate bodies in the business sector often require the Course as a Health and Safety employment requirement. NZ Police/ VOP require the Certificate as part of recruitment. Courses are held in a safe, modern and comfortable meeting room environment.

Certification – To graduate and be eligible for a Course Completion Certificate, participants must complete all assignments plus the practical driving assessment within 60 days following the Course.

Course Prerequisites – A Learner licence with at least three months driving experience is ideal. Graduation from the Course will provide up to 6 months off the 18 month restricted period.

 Course Bookings – can be made either via email or telephone, confirmed with a $50.00 deposit as per the options outlined below.

Accreditation:  The Course does not meet all of the NZQA Unit Standards accreditation unless additional learning modules are included to meet NZQA criteria.

 Confirmation fee/ deposit – a non-refundable fee of $50.00 is required to confirm your booking via any of the following: –

  • Internet banking transfer * (Please ensure your surname, phone number and ref DDC are recorded in the deposit details).
  • Direct deposit at any branch of the ANZ Bank * (Please ensure your surname, phone number and ref DDC are recorded on the deposit slip accompanying payment).
  • Posting a cheque (Please include your name and contact details – send to P.O. Box 9414 Hamilton 3240 and mark DDC.
  • Make a time to drop in the deposit to our office. Please phone Ward for more information.

Any remaining course fees are to be paid prior to the commencement of training. Payment of any outstanding balance owing is to be made “on the day” at latest via cash, eftpos or cheque.

 Note: Failure to turn up for the Course means foregoing the $50.00 deposit!
